“Nitro” Top Fuel Dragster
$55.00
Description
Tame the world’s fastest rubber band–powered production dragsters! Our factory Nitro Top Fuel Dragster can run 50 ft in as little as 2.5 seconds.
The Nitro dragster kit is built at 1:18 sport scale and modeled after a current top fuel dragster. It is legal for competition in the Great American Dragster Derby (GADD). The Nitro is easy to build, and its design allows quick access to the rubber band power system and gear unit.
The Nitro runs smoothly on its wide rear foam tires. The front suspension handles uneven surfaces, and the steering system lets you fine-tune direction. A special winding tool is included.
We recommend using white glue to build your dragster. Thanks to the interlocking chassis design, you can complete your racer in very little time.
Use markers to decorate your racer while keeping it light. Paint may be used as well.
Kit Contents:
The Nitro kit includes all laser-cut plywood parts needed to build the racer and the winding tool. Also included are all metal gears, axles, a .187” rubber motor, windshield, small plastic parts, and an Allen wrench. Two rear foam tires with rim kits, plus two grooved wooden front wheels with O-rings, are included. Detailed building and racing instructions are provided.
The Nitro easily completes a 50 ft run (20th scale of a 1000 ft NHRA run) in under 3 seconds.
You can improve performance by applying STEM principles. Variables you can adjust include:
- Power: Increase or decrease power by changing the width and/or number of rubber string loops.
- Gear Ratio: Select different pinion and crown gears to optimize acceleration or top speed.
- Wheel Weight: Add weight to your rims for increased traction.
- Overall Racer Weight: Add or adjust ballast for optimal traction and stability.
- Aerodynamics: Sand the racer for improved airflow.
Overall Length: 15 inches (38 cm)
Curriculum: Spotlight on Teamwork, Careers & STEM (available as a free download with each multipack purchase).
We recommend that up to five students share one GADD racer and work together as a team.
Team Roles:
- Crew Chief
- Mechanic
- Driver
- Artist
- Public Relations Agent
Other students in the class serve as race officials.
This real-life scenario gives students firsthand experience working together toward the common goal of winning a race.
